Ashley Alger Chartered FCSI - Chairman & Chief Executive Officer

Ashley's career in stockbroking began at Cawood Smithie & Co. in 1979. He qualified and became a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1985. In 1991 he became the partner responsible for finance, settlement and administration. In 2000, after the acquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Brown Shipley Investment Managers. Ashley is a founding Director of Cardale and is responsible for the  strategy and for the day to day management of the business, as well as being chair of the management and risk committees.

Richard Whiteley Chartered FCSI - Executive Director

Richard began his career at Cawood Smithie & Co in 1981 and became a partner in 1991.  In 2000, following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie & Co, he was appointed the Regional Director of Brown Shipley for the North East.  Richard is a founding director of Cardale and is responsible for the private client function of the company as well as being the Chief Investment Officer which heads up the investment committee.

Charles Kerr - Executive Director

Qualified as an accountant in 1976 after a career in the RAF and joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1979.  Became Finance Partner in Cawood Smithie & Co in 1985, and was subsequently made Deputy Senior Partner.  Charles became an Executive Director of Cardale at its inception and has oversight of the operational and financial functions of the business.





 
Stephen Vasey - Compliance Officer

Stephen is a Chartered Accountant with 36 years experience in all aspects of discretionary and advisory portfolio management and administration for private clients. He joined the firm from Gerrard Limited (formerly Capel-Cure Sharp) as Compliance Manager and subsequently became the firm’s Compliance Officer responsible for the compliance oversight function for the business. Stephen is a member of the management and risk committees.

Andrew Tod - Head of Finance, Risk and Operations

Andrew is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant, and has been in the Financial Services sector since 1993. His professional career has led him to senior finance positions at TD Waterhouse and Brown Shipley, following their acquisition of Cawood Smithie. Prior to joining Cardale in March 2010, Andrew worked as a senior manager at KPMG, in their Financial Services Regulatory and Compliance function, and has comprehensive knowledge of financial, operational and risk management within FSA regulated businesses. He is also a member of the management and risk committees.

Catherine Powell - Company Secretary and Head of HR

Catherine has worked in a HR capacity since 1992 and is a fully qualified MCIPD HR professional. Predominately working in the financial services environment, Catherine has worked for Lloydstsb, PricewaterhouseCoopers and latterly Brown Shipley providing HR and legal advice on a regional basis. She joined Cardale Asset Management in 2003 and is a member of the management committee.

Richard Whiteley, Executive Director, Chief Investment Officer and  Chair of the Investment Committee, has responsibility for the strategic direction of Cardale's Investment Management. He is supported on the committee by Nigel Paterson, Head of Investment Management who has many years experience gained within the sector.  In addition Cardale's research analysts, Mark Puleikis and Ian Wood, sit on the Investment Committee to provide expert technical input and advice.

The Harrogate and Hull investment management teams are responsible for implementing the strategic output of the Investment Committee on an individual client basis. The teams carry vast experience and expertise as all members of staff have been working within the investment management industry for many years.

Nigel Paterson Chartered FCSI - Head of Investment Management

Nigel has worked within the investment management industry since the 1980's.  Formerly with Allied Provincial Securities and Greig Middleton, he joined Cawood Smithie in 1996.  Following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, he became an Associate Investment Director in Brown Shipley.   Nigel joined Cardale in 2003 to head up our Hull office. He was promoted to Head of Investment in December 2008 and is now based in Harrogate. Nigel is an active member of the management and investment committees.

Neil Brayshaw Chartered FCSI - Associate Director

Neil began his stockbroking career in 1981 with Cawood Smithie & Co in Harrogate where he qualified and became an individual member of the London Stock Exchange in 1987.  After leaving the firm in 1988, Neil joined Greig Middleton's (now Barclays Wealth) private client department in York, focusing on advisory and discretionary fund management. In 1997, Neil rejoined Cawood Smithie's private client deaprtment until the firm was acquired by Brown Shipley and moved to the latter's Leeds office. Neil left Brown Shipley in February 2004 to join Cardale Asset Management, where his primary role is that of discretionary fund manager, looking after private client, trust and charity investment portfolios .

Sue Halliday ACA TEP Chartered MCSI - Associate Director

Following University, Sue trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in Leeds and subsequently with Ernst & Young. Sue specialises in private client matters and set up her own business prior to joining Cawood Smithie in 1999. Following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, Sue became Deputy Director within Brown Shipley's Tax & Legal Department and subsequently joined Cardale where she qualified as a Discretionary Investment Manager. Sue is also a qualified Trust and Estates Practitioner and specialises in providing discretionary investment advice to individuals,families, pension funds, Trusts and Charitable organisations.

Amanda Lyons Chartered FCSI - Associate Director

After graduating from the University of Northumbria, Amanda followed a career into stockbroking with Cawood Smithie & Co, Harrogate where she qualified. Her career took her to London where she worked for Lazard Asset Management Ltd, UBS AG and latterly as a Client Director for Rothschild Private Banking and Trust. Amanda joined Cardale Asset Management in July 2010 where she specialises in providing investment advice to high net worth clients and trusts. She is also responsible for Cardale's Investment Consulting and Attribution Analysis Service. Amanda is also a member of the investment and risk committees.

Jimmy Crewe Chartered FCSI - Senior Investment Manager

Jimmy has been in the investment management industry since 1995.  His expertise covers advisory and discretionary client portfolios, trusts, charities and pensions.  Jimmy also has specialist knowledge of unit trusts, venture capital trusts and structured investments.  His extensive knowledge in setting investment strategy  and developing ideas for clients complements the Cardale approach.  Formerly with Redmayne Bentley, he joined Cardale in  April 2006.

Melanie Satterthwaite Chartered MCISI, Dip PFS - Senior Investment Manager

After graduating from the University of York, Melanie began her stockbroking career in 1984 with Grieveson, Grant & Co in London. She remained in London for 20 years during which time she worked for Deloittes, Credit Suisse and Julius Baer before joining SG Hambros and moving back to Yorkshire. During her professional life, in addition to covering discretionary and advisory portfolio management, she has also had experience of chairing asset allocation committees and being repsonsible for investment strategy and portfolio construction. Melanie joined Cardale in January 2010.

Jeremy Elder Chartered MCSI - Senior Investment Manager

After graduating from Durham University in 1999, Jeremy spent a year in Australia working for Macquarie Bank and ABN Amro; before returning to the UK to pursue a career in private client investment management. In 2001, he joined Brown Shipley and then Cardale in 2003.

Nicholas Alger - Trainee Investment Advisor

After completing his education at Giggleswick School, Settle  and Ashville College in Harrogate,  Nicholas joined Cardale in October 2009.  He is a student member of the CISI and is currently studying towards his Investment Advice Diploma.

Mark Puleikis MCSI - Research Analyst

Mark previously worked at Merrill Lynch in London heading up the global beverage and European consumer products team. Mark has also acted as appointed corporate broker to some of the largest names in this sector.  During his time in London he was consistently rated the number one analyst by fund managers.  The appointment of Mark to Cardale in April 2009 further strengthens the Cardale research team and he is an active member of the research and investment committees.

Ian Wood MCSI - Research Analyst


Ian graduated from Durham University in 1995 and has been working in the Investment Management sector ever since.  Previously working at Yorkshare and Redmayne Bentley, he latterly joined Rensburg Sheppards where he acted as Fund Manager and group analyst for the area.  Ian joined Cardale in December 2006 and is responsible for providing all research information to the investment management teams as well as working on Cardale's Investment Consulting and Attribution Analysis. Ian is also a member of the research and investment committees.

Martin Fountain - Dealer

Joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1998 working within the Settlement function and moved on to work as part of the dealing team. Following the acquisition by Brown Shipley in 2000, Martin took the opportunity of moving to London with the company and worked as a Dealer there. After spending 3 years working in the City he moved back to Harrogate to take the position of Dealer with Cardale in September 2003.

The origins of the Hull office of Cardale dates back to the mid 1980's when all of our current staff were employed by the well respected local firm of Fowler Sutton. As with many firms within our industry the team have witnessed a number of changes as the business grew. Eventually joining with colleagues in Harrogate as Cawood Smithie & Co in 1996 and then Cardale in 2003. The office enjoys a wealth of experience and has seen its funds under management and reputation grow substantially over the years. They were joined in late 2006 and early 2007 by another investment team who had previously worked with Brewin Dolphin Securities.

Giles Fairburn Chartered FCSI - Associate Director

Giles began his career in stockbroking in the mid 1980’s.  Formerly with Fowler Sutton and Capel-Cure Myers, he joined Cawood Smithie & Co in 1997, and following the acquisition of Cawood Smithie & Co by Brown Shipley, became an Associate Investment Director.  Giles joined Cardale's Hull office in 2003 and was promoted to manage the Hull office in December 2008.

Robert Henshilwood Chartered MCSI - Senior Investment Manager


After reading economics at university, Robert has worked in stockbroking since 1978, firstly as a researcher with Tilney & Co based in Liverpool.  He then moved into private client broking and in 1999 started up PH Pope & Son in Hull which was subsequently taken over by Brewin Dolphin in 2007.  He joined the Cardale's Hull office in February 2007.

Alex Flower Chartered FCSI - Investment Manager

Graduated from Hull University in 2003 with a joint honours degree in Computer Science and Management studies.  Worked for the Magistrates Courts Service in the Fine Enforcement division, before joining Brewin Dolphin Securities in October 2004 as a Trainee Investment Manager.  Alex joined Cardale's Hull office  in December 2006 and focuses on private client portfolio management.

Ian Marshall - Investment Advisor

Ian graduated in Law from Hull University and was part of the inaugural team at Popes Stockbrokers in Hull in 1999.  He remained with the company following the acquisition by Brewin Dolphin in 2002.  He joined Cardale in December 2006 and focuses his attention on investment management, probate and intermediary work.

Following the acquisition of Holistic Financial and Wealth Management by Cardale Asset Management in October 2010, Cardale Financial Planning was born. We offer independent advice on a broad range of financial products. The service is carried out by qualified and experienced financial advisers and covers such areas as investment planning, inheritance tax planning, pension advice and tax efficient long term care planning for the elderly.

Anthony Hinds FPC P G Dip (Ac) - Financial Planning Director

Following an extensive career in retail financial services, which culminated in Anthony becoming Head of Mortgage Credit with First Direct, Anthony qualified as a Financial Adviser and formed Holistic Financial Planning and Wealth Management in 1996. Anthony is currently authorised to provide Cardale Asset Management clients with financial planning advice and holds specific qualifications in relation to Retirement and Long Term Care.

Peter Bainbridge BA(Econ) IMC - Financial Planning Director

After graduating from Manchester University, Peter followed a career in banking and finance which included positions at NatWest and Mercantile Credit before working as an IFA for Kingsmead IFA Ltd. He joined Anthony Hinds at Holistic Financial Planning and Wealth Management in 2002. Peter is a Member of Chartered Financial Analyst Society UK and is authorised to provide financial planning advice to Cardale Asset Management clients.

Steven Moss-Blundell DipPFS - Financial Planning Adviser

Steve has worked in the financial services industry for 8 years, initially for Holistic Financial Planning & Wealth Management before its acquisition by Cardale Asset Management. He holds the Diploma in Financial Planning and is studying towards the Advanced Diploma. He is an adviser in non-investment regulated activities such as mortgages and insurances and holds the appropriate qualification in Equity Release. Steve is currently training to achieve full competent adviser status with the target of providing financial planning advice to Cardale Asset Management clients.

Hilary Tearle - Financial Planning Regulation & Compliance

After a varied career which has spanned teaching, designing, obtaining a Law degree and working for the Citizens Advice Bureau, Hilary came to Financial Services in 2000. Initially she worked for Zurich and then Holistic Wealth Management before it was taken over by Cardale Asset Management in October 2010. Hilary is involved in non-investment advice with a specialism in Equity Release. She also carries out regulatory, supervisory and compliance functions for the Financial Planning side of the business.

John Osbaldeston - Senior Manager

John has more than 20 years experience in personal and trust tax work. He started his tax career with the Inland Revenue before leaving in 1990 to join the personal tax department of Baker Tilly, Chartered Accountants and subsequently KPMG. He joined Cawood Smithie from KPMG in 2000. Following the aquisition of Cawood Smithie by Brown Shipley, John joined Cardale in 2003 and was subsequently appointed to manage the tax department.

Stuart Fountain - Accountancy and Taxation Manager

Stuart owned his own accountancy practice (Fountain & Co Accountants) until the acquisition by Cardale on 1 December, 2008.  Stuart brings 30 years expertise in accountancy systems and accounts production for both sole trader and limited companies.

Colin Bradley - Tax Manager

Began his career in 1967 with the Inland Revenue as a Tax Officer, Higher Grade. In 1976 he then joined Grant Thornton, Chartered Accountants in their personal tax and trust department. In 1987 Colin moved to Binder Hamlyn, Chartered Accountants and subsequently transferred with a portfolio of clients to Wilson, Braithwaite Scholey, Chartered Accountants. Colin joined the personal tax and trust department of Cardale in December 2004 and was promoted to Tax Manager at the end of July 2008.

Martin Worsnop - Accounts Technician

Martin started his accountancy career at Holeys in 1998 before spending a year in Australia working for Toyota Finance. On returning to the UK he worked for DSC and Bentley Jennison before heading the accounts department of a successful firm of property solicitors. Martin joined Cardale in June 2011.

Andy Nelson - IT Manager

Andy joined the team at Cardale in July 2011. With over 20 years experience in the IT sector, he has held a number of senior positions in local firms. Andy possesses a wide range of IT qualifications and skills which enables Cardale to operate on a sound and robust IT platform.
