How we work

Investment performance is our main priority. Our investment process is geared towards the long-term preservation and growth of your wealth in line with your individual needs, expectations and attitude to risk. You will have a direct relationship with your Investment Manager who will be available to discuss and provide advice. We will contact you regularly, explaining our investment strategy and overall portfolio performance.

We manage your investment portfolio in the context of your wider financial affairs. Our personal tax department provides personal taxation services to Cardale clients, and Trusts and offers support to investment managers in matters of tax compliance and advises on income, capital gains and inheritance tax planning. We offer a comprehensive range of tax efficient investments and have agreements in place with a number of the UK’s leading SIPP providers which allow us to manage underlying SIPP assets. We work with other professional advisers to cover the full range of financial planning.

Many businesses outsource their office and administrative functions. At Cardale, we do not believe in placing critical aspects of our business in the hands of third parties so centralise all admin functions, allowing us to provide a consistently high level of service and support.

We use a rigorous screening technique based on strict criteria to identify potential investment opportunities. We then perform an in-depth analysis based on business quality, balance sheet strength, cash flow and growth potential.

This is to ensure that the potential investment represents a secure and sustainable business proposition.

The final part of our process is valuation as it is important, wherever possible, to purchase stock trading at a discount rather than at its long-term fair value. Only when an investment has satisfied all aspects of this process will it be considered for inclusion in your investment portfolio.

Balancing Risk and Reward

Historically, stock markets have demonstrated that high risk does not automatically go hand-in-hand with high reward. At Cardale, we aim to help you realise your investment objectives through a combination of suitable asset classes.

Cardale endeavours to balance risk and potential reward to meet your requirements. Each person has their own definition of risk and their approach to it. For some, the return on cash is a suitable benchmark, whereas for others, the return of stock market or private investor indices is more relevant. By understanding your objectives, we will build an investment portfolio that reflects your priorities and tolerance to risk.

Measuring Performance

Whilst many money managers benchmark their performance against the major stock market indices, Cardale’s experience is that the majority of private investors and trustees are trying to generate a positive return on their capital.

As a firm we are benchmark aware but not benchmark driven. We do not restrict ourselves to market weightings and are not afraid to hold significant amounts of cash in portfolios for a length of time.

If we believe it is in your best interests to be underweight or overweight in any one asset class or industry group, we will adjust the content of the investment portfolio accordingly.

The starting point for stock selection is initial screening using a multi-factor model, which interrogates market data to find the best combination of quality, value, growth and momentum. Once a stock has been identified, we look more closely at the economics of the business and the valuation. If a stock passes this stage of scrutiny, we move onto qualitive due diligence. Only after passing this stage is the stock presented to the Stock Selection Committee where a final decision is taken.

The Stock Selection Committee meets officially monthly but communicates regularly to discuss stocks we hold or are considering. This is a vital part of the investment process as markets can move incredibly quickly, so we need the ability to react quickly to the markets and share movements.

We provide a full nominee service that holds stock on behalf of clients, and cash management accounts, that ensure quick and efficient stock settlement and handling of corporate events.
